Ura bends backwards over a breaking wave while cherry blossoms fall around him, a sumo moment drawn the way an Edo-period printmaker might have caught it. The pose is izori (居反り), one of the rarest of the 82 official kimarite: the wrestler drops beneath his opponent's charge, grips behind the knees and throws him over backwards. Most fans can go years without seeing it, and Ura, the most acrobatic rikishi of his generation, is one of the very few who can pull it off. A homage to the Great Wave and to the one technique in sumo that looks like it should be impossible, for sumo fans, Japan lovers and anyone who has stood in front of a Hokusai print for longer than planned.
